Taking vacations is one of the few pleasurable highlights of a person’s life. It’s a chance when you get to unwind and relax. It’s a brief period of time when you get to enjoy life unhurried and at your own pace.

Whether vacations are taken with family, as a couple, or alone, traveling can be expensive if you really want to have an enjoyable trip and participate in the local attractions. When you plan and budget your vacation carefully, you can enjoy it for the length of your trip and not stress over how much everything will cost.

Some tips for enjoying a fun, budget-friendly vacation include the following things:

  • Use any airline travel points to offset costs for traveling. Since these points add up with certain applicable transactions, careful planning with spending can help you plan a great vacation.
  • Find deals and discounts on websites like Offers.com. Travel websites give you tips and leads on where to find the best hotels, restaurants, and local attractions for you or the family.
  • Plan well ahead of the proposed trip time to help you safely and adequately save and plan for your trip. Starting anywhere from six months to a year ahead of time will give you the room you need to plan a really nice but budgeted vacation.
  • If you don’t travel by air (and use your frequent flier miles), car travel is likely the next least expensive form of travel for the budget-conscious person. It also keeps you from having to rent a car when you arrive at your destination.

Good planning is the key to enjoying a nice vacation away from the routines of daily living. If the vacation is thoroughly planned and laid out, you may even be able to enjoy more than one yearly vacation or even be able to extend your normal vacation time a little longer.

Part of the joy of taking a vacation is the preparation and shopping before the trip. Coupons and coupon codes can be found online for all of your travel and vacation needs. Whether you are looking for baggage, travel clothing, hotel bookings or toiletries, it is worth looking for special offers available with the coupons.

After you have made your purchases, the next challenge is to pack for the trip. A good tactic is to choose a colour scheme and make sure that everything goes with everything else. A basic colour like black is good for a city vacation with a few contrasting colors for interest. Pack accessories and jewelry to go with your outfits. Layers are helpful and versatile. Don’t pack thick or heavy items. A thin windbreaker, a hat and a scarf go a long way.

A few pairs of shoes are essential. Walking shoes, sandals and a low-heeled dress shoe need to be packed. Make sure that the color matches with your color scheme or go for a contrast. Pack some trousers in a lightweight fabric that doesn’t need ironing. Choose neutral colors that you can wear often with many other pieces of clothing. Pack some socks or tights for a sudden cold chill in the weather.

Here’s a practical basic list for a summer vacation:
- undergarments for each day
- a few strappy tops
- loose cotton shirts
- cotton trousers and shorts
- crinkly skirt
- summer dress
- dressy & casual blouses
- cardigan
- bathing suit
- hat
- shoes

Don’t forget to take mosquito repellant, toiletries, your favorite fragrance and waterless cleanser for your hands. Little containers for shampoo, conditioner and other creams and lotions make for easy packing too. Use plastic sandwich bags to ensure that they don’t leak into the luggage.

Now you just need to enjoy your vacation and relax.

day 76 - credit cards

Travelers who go overseas often find themselves in sticky situations due to problems with foreign currency exchange. At times, they are unable to use their existing credit cards because they are not acceptable by a particular merchant. It is also possible that they are unable to withdraw cash as the bank won’t accept their credit or debit card. Carrying cash is not recommended as there chances of getting mugged and losing it entirely are high. While traveler’s cheques are convenient, finding a bank nearby in case of emergency can be troublesome. The remedy to all such problems is a prepaid card designed for international travelers.

These cards can be country specific or generic in nature. For example, if you are travelling to China, you can buy a loaded prepaid card specific to China. All the cash loaded into this card is in local currency and is acceptable at all the merchant establishments that take cards. Since the card is country and currency specific, you need not worry about heavy transaction costs may occur when using your own debit or credit card. This prepaid card is as good as a local debit card; hence, you can withdraw money through ATMs at your own convenience whenever you need cash.

As far as security is concerned, the card is covered by insurance in case it is stolen and used inappropriately. Thus, all your cash is safe in case of robbery. Also, the card is similar to a debit card: it cannot be used without entering a PIN number. This simply means no one else other than you can use the card to withdraw money from an ATM.  Just in case you lose the card, you can report it to the issuing company immediately and the lost card will be blocked.  You can generally also be issues a fresh prepaid card at nominal cost.

South Africa: Around The World Art #019

Hustle and bustle is what we do. It’s a fact of life in today’s society. Hustle and bustle pays the bills so we can feel safe and secure, but it really doesn’t do a whole lot for the nerves, the soul, or the hairline.

The whole point of a vacation is to get away from the everyday. Nothing does that like a foreign getaway. Head to southern Europe for sunny times and rich culture. Go to northern Europe if you’re looking for beautiful countryside (the Scottish Highlands are unparalleled) and castles that will make you wish you were a knight. To most Westerners, Africa is still the dark, uncharted continent it was 150 years ago. Not so–South Africa is an attractive vacation spot, as is the ancient city of Cairo in Egypt. The cultures and landscapes of Africa are like nothing seen in America.

One of the hidden treasures of the earth’s surface is Iceland. Located between England and Greenland, it’s a welcoming country, with a smaller population than most American cities. It’s home to deserts, glaciers, lush mountains, beaches, an unlimited supply of geothermal waters, and lots of sheep.

Another international hot spot is Belize, just a small creek away from southernmost Mexico. This country bears a warning, though: A few days and you’ll be content to walk the beaches and live in a small hut for the rest of your days. It’s a beach side paradise with friendly locals and the best sunsets in the western hemisphere.

However, there are plenty of vacation opportunities stateside, if you want a more familiar feel. If you’re the adventurous type seeking solitude in nature, rent a cabin along the Wasatch front. If you’re looking for a more metropolitan vacation, check out New York City flats or New Jersey luxury apartments.

Remember that hustle and bustle gets us through the day, but vacation gets us through life.

Gulf Shores, Alabama. Beach.

It is the worst oil spill in U.S. history but it has not spoiled the beaches of the Gulf Coast. Tourism bureaus are trying to get the word out that the beaches are still open and vacation plans should not be changed. The news coverage that the spill has received has caused a great deal of concern about traveling to the area but local officials insist it is safe. The Mississippi Development Authority Tourism Division put out this statement to counteract the misinformation that they say is being put out by the media, “it continues to be safe to travel to Mississippi and to our beaches that border the Gulf.”

In Gulf Shores Alabama the beaches have been declared safe to use as well. At the end of July, the Alabama Department of Public Health lifted the swimming advisory for the gulf waters at Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan. The state says water conditions have improved dramatically. The state has also reopened all waters for recreational catch and release fishing. A number of hotels and resorts in the area have cut prices to try and lure tourists back.

The Florida Gulf Coast has never been negatively impacted by the oil spill. Beaches up and down the state remain open. To hammer home the point that travel to the area should not be a concern, President Obama himself if planning to vacation with his family in the region. The White House has announced that the first family will be spending some time on the beach at an undisclosed location before the Presidents daughters have to start back to school. In another sign that life in the region is returning to normal. the Agriculture Department has opened the waters off of Florida’s coast to commercial fishing. The government has determined that seafood from the Gulf is safe to eat.

When it is time for a summer vacation most people are thinking about somewhere sunny and warm. This summer has been so brutally hot across much of the United States though that a number of travellers are looking for someplace cool. This may be the summer for a trip to Alaska, Argentina or Australia.

In Anchorage, Alaska the average temperature in July is just under 60 degrees. This is a great place to visit to get away from the hot humid summer weather. Boat tours are offered in Anchorage to go whale watching or see the glaciers. An Alaskan cruise is another great way to beat the heat, there are deals to be found because of the recession.

Another cool summer vacation spot is San Francisco. The average temperature for the city by the bay in July is just over 70 degrees. It was Mark Twain who joked that the coldest winter he ever experienced was summer in San Francisco. There is so much to see in San Francisco from the Golden Gate Bridge to Fisherman’s Wharf. Napa Wine Country is also just a short drive away and so is the Monterrey Peninsula.

July is high season in Argentina where the average temperature is about 60 degrees. Not too far from Buenos Aries, you can head for the Penitentes and go skiing or travel to Patagonia and explore one of the biggest ice shelfs outside of the North or South Pole. You can also take a July ski vacation in Santiago, Chile. This is peak season in Valle Nevado.

If you are feeling really adventurous the temperature is cool in New Zealand. Air New Zealand has slashed fares from the U.S. to try and drum up some business. Hiking the Fox Glacier or the Franz Joseph Glacier will be an experience you will never forget. You are sure to forget about the heat and humidity inside one of the many ice caves.
